What do the Rocker Girls do here at the camp?
A typical day at Rocker Girl Camp includes a morning stretch and vocal/body warm up. Then it’s off to the first instrument class (keys, vocals, guitars, bass, drums, strings…). An hour later there is a class switch and the girls head off the the second instrument class. During lunch we usually rock out to tunes and have a dance session after the food has settled.
Afternoon sessions include guest speakers from all branches of the musical community. Some subjects covered include songwriting, music business, musicianship, touring, band communication, sound engineering, drug and alcohol awareness, and sound recording. The final two hours of the day include a jam and band rehearsal. It is fun, challenging, and intense all in one!
“I’m excited about sending my child to the camp. The all girl
environment will allow her to get grounded as a musician first, and take away the emphasis on her being a girl . I think if the camp was boys and girls the the contrast would make their sexuality stand out.
It would take too much time and energy away from music and may change the focus to finding their place in the social/sexual status instead of blossoming as musicians. This camp is going to focus on creating confident musicians and that’s why I’m excited to enroll my child.
Sincerely, a supportive ‘Rockergirl Camp’ mom”. (Victoria, B.C.)
“Music camps for girls are a growing trend in North America. Rocker Girl Camp will be the first of its kind in Alberta. There is a growing demand for an open learning environment for music as a form of positive self-expression. Women need to foster strong independance when considering entering an industry (ROCK!) that is predominately male. The goal is to provide quality instruction in a professional environment to young women aged 10-16, while also supporting our local professional musicians.
Adolescent girls need dynamic and positive opportunities where all peers are created equal. Rock and Roll is fun. It has North American roots. Women are now recording and touring in this genre with great integrity.”
